Description
THE HANGMAN (1964)
Animated. Colour. 12 minutes.
Based on Maurice Ogden's award-winning poem and narrated by Herschel Bernardi, this animated film creates a chilling metaphoric journey of the forces of evil as they grow and flourish in the fertile soil of apathy and social irresponsibility. The story concerns a town where a mysterious hangman comes and sets up a gallows in the square outside the courthouse. He begins hanging the residents one by one. Rather than interfere or stop the hangman, the people apathetically stand by and rationalize each victimization and feel relieved each time the hangman comes for someone else. At the end, there is only one person left — and there is no one left to protest on his behalf.
The film was a co-winner of the Silver Sail award at the Locarno International Film Festival in 1964.
It is a great short film dealing with the all too common situation of a bystander's apathy enabling atrocities and injustices. The film makes a great starting point for thinking about or discussions on bullying, tyranny, abuse and victimization (and the importance of not being and apathetic coward).
This movie is in the public domain so there are no restrictions on sharing, copying and use.
